In modern industrial societies, designers have a complex role to play, by designing products which have explicit practical functions.

Besides creating useful products and images, significantly, they also produce and reproduce cultural meanings through those products and images. To achieve this, designers have to understand social and cultural contexts to comprehend fully their own roles in society.

It cannot be denied, therefore, that designers have become significant creators of meaning in everyday life in modern society. And people rely on such products and messages for their perspective on the world and also on their relationships with others.

Indeed, designers contribute to the making of what may be called cultural minds cape. And we can’t understand the role of designers in society unless we examine the context in which the designers practice.

Designers have a professional obligation to recognise the cultural meanings they produce....
