While India was fighting for freedom, Kerala, was also experiencing a similar social and cultural renaissance. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, travelled to Kerala on five occasions - in 1920 (August 18), 1925 (March 8-19), 1927 (October 9-25), 1934 (January 10- 22) and 1937 (January 12-21). Each visit had a specific purpose which brought about significant changes in the community by unifying individuals and organisations from all three provinces –Travancore, Kochi and Malabar – people from different social groups who had been divided by the caste system.

1920 (August 18-19): Mahatma Gandhi visited Kerala for the first time on August 18, 1920, as part of a campaign to promote the non-cooperation movement against the British’s Rowlatt Act and to support the Khilafat campaign. It was in Kozhikode that European colonization took root in India.
