Acharya Vinoba Bhave The first individual satyagrahi chosen by Mahatma Gandhi

   The year 2020 marks the 125th birth anniversary of Acharya Vinaba Bhave (Vinayak Narahari ‘Vinoba’ Bhave), one of the most devout followers of Mahatma Gandhi. He was an ardent freedom fighter, social reformer, advocate of non-violence and spiritual teacher. He is also broadly considered the spiritual successor of Mahatma Gandhi as his whole life is based on spirituality, empathy and love.

   Vinoba Bhave rose to eminence in 1940, when Gandhi chose him as the first ‘Individual Satyagrahi’ (proponent of satyagraha) and Jawaharlal Nehru as the second, when the Indian National Congress decided to launch individual satyagraha as part of freedom struggle.

  His efforts for the welfare of the people was appreciated all over the world. The first recipient of the Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, Bhave was awarded the Bharat Ratna, posthumously, in 1983.
