Sarojini Naidu A Poet in the Constituent Assembly

Sarojini Naidu, a vigorous leader of India’s freedom struggle and a well-known poet was one of the fifteen women members of the legendary Constituent Assembly that debated and drafted India’s constitution.

Her literary work as a poet earned her the nickname the “Nightingale of India”, or “Bharat Kokila” by Mahatma Gandhi because of colour, imagery and lyrical quality of her poetry.

Sarojini Naidu was the first Indian woman to be president of the Indian National Congress and the first woman to become the governor of a state (Uttar Pradesh) in Independent India. She held this office until her death on 2nd March 1949.

Sarojini was Mahatma Gandhi’s most faithful lieutenant who encouraged women to participate in politics in India. It was in 1905, during a protest over the partition of Bengal, that she joined the Indian National Congress.
