Teachers’ shortage

   The number of teachers in India’s higher education sector has declined by 81,031 within a year—from 13,65,786 to 12,84,755 in 2017-18. In all, 68.9 per cent of teachers in the post of associate professors consist of ad-hoc or contractual staff. The number of temporary staff across universities has gone up from 4.9% to 9% in the last one year.

Railway crossing deaths

   At least six people lose their lives daily while crossing the railway lines in India. During 2004-15, some 26,000 people were killed at railway crossings.

Internet shutdowns

   India leads the world in the number of internet shutdowns, with over 100 reported incidents in 2018 alone, compared to 70 shutdowns last year. Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest number of Internet shutdowns with at least 36 documented incidents in 2018. Other States where Internet....
